Is a septoplasty done as part of a rhinoplasty?
Yes, each and every rhinoplasty includes straightening and repairing the septum, as needed, to preserve or improve breathing. Many times a small piece of septal cartilage (a graft) can be used in a different part of the nose to add support or change the shape of the final result.
Where is cartilage taken from if grafting is needed?
Cartilage grafting can be obtained from several sources, depending on the type needed. Strong, straight pieces can be harvested from either the septum of the nose if there is enough, or alternatively can be obtained from your own rib cartilage or a cadaver source. Weaker, curved cartilage can be obtained from your own ear without any detriment to the ear’s shape or function. Finally, we commonly remove small pieces of cartilage to optimize the shape of your nasal framework and those small pieces can be reused as small grafts too.
Will my nose be packed?
Definitely not! In fact, I rarely use stents either. Almost always a very small dissolvable suture is placed inside the nose to put gentle pressure in a few key spots and this is not usually even noticeable to you. Very rarely, a small trimmed stent may be placed inside and these easily and comfortably slide out at the first follow up visit.
